About the Mississippi operator exams

Water operator certification in Mississippi is administered by MSDH (Mississippi State Department of Health) — Bureau of Public Water Supply. The exact certification structure, exam format, and continuing-education requirements vary and change over time, so always confirm the current scope and eligibility directly with the agency. Our practice content focuses on the underlying technical material — the same operating principles, math, regulations, and treatment chemistry that show up on virtually every US drinking-water operator exam.

Frequently asked questions

How does Mississippi classify water operators?
Mississippi (MSDH Bureau of Public Water Supply) classifies systems into five operator classes per Class A through E. Class A: surface water treatment, groundwater under direct influence (GWUDI), lime softening, or coagulation/filtration removing constituents other than iron/manganese — qualification requires a bachelor's degree in engineering/applied sciences plus 1 year in a Class A plant, OR HS/GED plus 6 years of Class A experience including 1 year in a Class A plant. Class B: two or more Class C treatment facilities of different types, iron/manganese removal facilities breaking pressure or requiring flocculation/sedimentation, membrane filtration systems, or ion exchange treatment — requires HS/GED plus 3 years in Class A/B/C with at least 1 year in Class A or B. Class C: aeration, pH adjustment, corrosion control, closed pressure filtration (including zeolite softening or iron removal) — requires HS/GED plus 2 years in Class A/B/C/D with at least 1 year in Class A/B/C. Class D: no treatment beyond chlorination/fluoridation or direct chemical feed (e.g., polyphosphate) — requires HS/GED plus 1 year at the same or higher class. Class E: systems that purchase water only and do not provide additional treatment, OR operators whose only responsibility is distribution-system operation and maintenance — requires HS/GED plus 1 year. All applicants must pass the written examination required by the Bureau, and the required year of experience must be earned under the direct supervision of a certified waterworks operator at an equivalent or higher class. The supervising operator must sign a Certification Statement verifying the supervised experience. License renewal and CE tracking are handled via the MSDHWO online portal.
