About WaterOperatorPracticeTest.com

Free practice tests for professional water operator certification and state operator licensure exams — built by a licensed operator who came up through the field the same way you are.

Hi, I'm Albert

I've spent most of my career in water. I started in 2009 as a water meter reader, then stepped away for a few years to work as a charter boat captain — fun work, not steady. I came back to utilities in 2014 as a maintenance tech, first on water distribution and then on water and wastewater treatment plants. Five years of wrench-in-hand work taught me how every piece of a plant actually fits together: pumps, valves, chemistry, controls, the whole picture.

In 2019 I sat for my operator license. I worked as a licensed operator for four years before becoming a utility operations manager for my county in 2023, and more recently took over as manager of a large reverse osmosis treatment plant — which is where I am today.

I built this site because when I was studying for my first license exam, the prep was scattered, dated, or expensive. The questions on most websites were way too easy or wildly off-target from what was actually on the state exam. I want these quizzes to be the resource I wished I had — clean, well-written, organized by level and topic, and free.

Who this is for

Trainees and operators preparing for their first license, plus existing operators upgrading to a higher class. Most states' exams use the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) framework with four operator levels of increasing complexity, and the practice tests here are organized the same way. State-specific notes are on each state's page.

How questions are written

Every question on this site is reviewed against the ABC/WPI Need-to-Know Criteria and written in the same plain-English style you'd hear from a coworker explaining something on the plant floor. Each one includes an explanation so you actually learn the material instead of memorizing answers. If you spot an error or have a suggestion, please reach out — I read every message.

What you get with a free account

You can take any test without signing up. But when you create a free account, your scores save across devices, you get a daily study streak, and you can see which topics are pulling your scores down so you know exactly where to focus your study time. There's no credit card and nothing to upgrade — just a way to actually track your progress as you study.
