About the Tennessee operator exams

Operator certification in Tennessee covers several disciplines — drinking water, wastewater, distribution, and collections — which may be handled by the same agency or by separate programs (drinking water is administered by TDEC (Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation) — Water and Wastewater Operators Certification Board; training and exam administration through TDEC Fleming Training Center in Murfreesboro). The exact certification structure, exam format, levels, and continuing-education requirements vary by discipline and change over time, so always confirm the current scope and eligibility directly with the certifying agency. Our practice content focuses on the underlying technical material — the same operating principles, math, regulations, and process knowledge that show up on water and wastewater operator exams nationwide.

Frequently asked questions

How does Tennessee classify water operators?
Tennessee (TDEC Board) certifies operators at Grade I (lowest) through Grade IV (highest) for both Water Treatment Plant Operators and Water Distribution System Operators, plus a Small Water System certification. 70% to pass. Grade IV WTPO requires either (a) a bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry, or related science PLUS 12 months operating experience at a Grade III/IV facility, OR (b) a high-school diploma/equivalent PLUS 60 months operating experience at a Grade III/IV facility. If an applicant fails two prior exams for Grade III or IV, 30 hours of Board-sanctioned comprehensive training is required before reapplying (18 hours for Grade I/II). Renewal is filed annually, but continuing education accumulates over a 3-year cycle: 6 hours for Grades 1–2, 12 hours for Grades 3–4. Same CE course cannot be used in consecutive cycles. Renewal fees: $50 if filed by Feb 1; $100 between Feb 1 and June 30. Certifications are cancelled if not renewed by June 30. Governing rules: TCRR 0400-49-01 and 1200-05-03-.07.
Are these the exact questions on the Tennessee exam?

The official exam is administered by TDEC (Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation) — Water and Wastewater Operators Certification Board; training and exam administration through TDEC Fleming Training Center in Murfreesboro (or its testing vendor) and the exact questions are not public.
