Wastewater Treatment Class 1: Entry-Level Operator

Which level should you start with?
The levels build on each other, so the honest answer is to start at the one your system runs at and work up. Each test below is a full bank on its own.
- Wastewater Treatment Class 1: Entry-Level Operator, 119 questions, covering the core of plant operation: wastewater characteristics, preliminary and primary treatment, and the basics of activated sludge.
- Wastewater Treatment Class 2: Intermediate Operator, 108 questions, covering process control in earnest, with more lab work and more of the math that runs a plant.
- Wastewater Treatment Class 3: Advanced Operator, 114 questions, covering advanced treatment and troubleshooting, heavier on solids handling and digestion.
- Wastewater Treatment Class 4: Expert / Large System Operator, 114 questions, covering large-system operation, where process control and interpreting your own lab data carry the most weight.
What the wastewater exam covers
Across all four levels the wastewater bank runs 455 questions. Weighted by where the questions actually are, the heaviest areas are maintenance & pumps (76), Activated sludge & BNR (68), lab & sampling (67), math (56), solids & digestion (45), preliminary & clarification (43). Operator math shows up at every level, which is the part most people underestimate.
What your state calls it
Your state may not call it what this page calls it. Across the 50 states there are 20 different names for the same entry-level wastewater license, Class D, Class I, Grade I, Grade 1, Class 1 and more. The material behind them is largely the same, which is why these tests are organized by what you need to know rather than by one state’s numbering.

How to use these tests
Take a full-length test cold before you study anything. The score is not the point; the topic breakdown afterwards is, because it tells you which areas are actually costing you points instead of which ones feel hardest. Work those, wait a few days, and take it again. Questions are drawn at random, so a second run is a different test. Every question has a written explanation, and math questions show the work. There is no signup and nothing to pay.
