Which level should you start with?

The levels build on each other, so the honest answer is to start at the one your system runs at and work up. Each test below is a full bank on its own.

• Water Distribution Grade 1: Entry-Level Operator, 140 questions, covering the system itself: mains, valves, hydrants, storage, and the safety practices that go with working on them.
• Water Distribution Grade 2: Intermediate Operator, 140 questions, covering more equipment and water-quality work, including the sampling and residual questions that come up daily.
• Water Distribution Grade 3: Advanced Operator, 140 questions, covering advanced system operation, hydraulics and the math behind pressure and flow.
• Water Distribution Grade 4: Advanced / Large-System Operator, 140 questions, covering large-system operation, where hydraulics and water-quality management carry the most weight.

What the distribution exam covers

Across all four levels the distribution bank runs 560 questions. Weighted by where the questions actually are, the heaviest areas are safety (138), water quality & sampling (130), system components (120), equipment & maintenance (106), math (66). Operator math shows up at every level, which is the part most people underestimate.

What your state calls it

Your state may not call it what this page calls it. Class and grade names for distribution operators vary widely from state to state, and the material behind them is largely the same, which is why these tests are organized by what you need to know rather than by one state’s numbering.

How to use these tests

Take a full-length test cold before you study anything. The score is not the point; the topic breakdown afterwards is, because it tells you which areas are actually costing you points instead of which ones feel hardest. Work those, wait a few days, and take it again. Questions are drawn at random, so a second run is a different test. Every question has a written explanation, and math questions show the work. There is no signup and nothing to pay.
