About the South Dakota operator exams

Operator certification in South Dakota covers several disciplines — drinking water, wastewater, distribution, and collections — which may be handled by the same agency or by separate programs (drinking water is administered by SD DANR (Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, formerly DENR) — Office of Water, Operator Certification Program). The exact certification structure, exam format, levels, and continuing-education requirements vary by discipline and change over time, so always confirm the current scope and eligibility directly with the certifying agency. Our practice content focuses on the underlying technical material — the same operating principles, math, regulations, and process knowledge that show up on water and wastewater operator exams nationwide.

How does South Dakota classify water operators?
South Dakota (DANR Office of Water) certifies operators across seven tracks: water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment, wastewater collection, stabilization ponds, small water treatment systems, and very small water systems. Each tiered track runs Class I (entry) through Class IV (highest). Mandatory certification applies to all community and non-transient non-community water systems regardless of size, plus transient non-community systems using surface water/GWUDI or any disinfectant. Exam fee $60; applications due at least 2 weeks before the exam (ARSD 74:21:02:40). Renewal is annual on February 1 with no renewal fee after July 1, 2010. Contact-hour requirements (every 3 years, sliding scale): 10 hrs for one Class I/II cert, 20 hrs for one Class III/IV cert, 15 hrs for multiple certs all in Class I/II, 30 hrs for multiple certs including at least one Class III/IV. Governing law: SD Codified Law 34A-3; rules in ARSD 74:21:01-02.
