The exact certification structure, exam format, and continuing-education requirements vary and change over time, so always confirm the current scope and eligibility directly with the agency. Our practice content focuses on the underlying technical material — the same operating principles, math, regulations, and treatment chemistry that show up on virtually every US drinking-water operator exam.

Frequently asked questions

How does New Jersey classify water operators?
NJDEP licenses operators at T-1 (entry) through T-4 (highest) for Water Treatment and W-1 through W-4 for Water Distribution. A separate VSWS (Very Small Water System) license exists for the smallest community/non-transient non-community systems that don't use chemical treatment. T classification is point-based on size, source, and treatment in use (T-1 = ≤30 points, T-2 = 31–55, T-3 = 56–75, T-4 = ≥76); W classification is by population served (W-1 = <1,500; W-2 = 1,501–15,000; W-3 = 15,001–50,000; W-4 = 50,001+). Licenses run from issue date through September 30 and are renewed **annually** ($50 annual fee; $70 initial application fee). Continuing education accumulates over fixed three-year periods (Oct 1 – Sep 30 of year +3): 18 Training Contact Hours (TCH) per period for classes 1 and 2 and VSWS-12; 36 TCH per period for classes 3 and 4. No more than one-third of required TCHs may be safety-related. Exams are held three times yearly (March, June, October) in Trenton; application deadlines are Feb 15 / May 15 / Sep 15 respectively. Governing rule: N.J.A.C. 7:10A.
