About the South Carolina operator exams

Water operator certification in South Carolina is administered by South Carolina Environmental Certification Board (under SC Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation — SCLLR). Facility-side drinking-water regulation is handled separately by SC DES (Department of Environmental Services), formed when the former DHEC was split into DPH and DES.. The exact certification structure, exam format, and continuing-education requirements vary and change over time, so always confirm the current scope and eligibility directly with the agency. Our practice content focuses on the underlying technical material — the same operating principles, math, regulations, and treatment chemistry that show up on virtually every US drinking-water operator exam.

Frequently asked questions

How does South Carolina classify water operators?
South Carolina certifies Water Treatment Operators at Classes E (entry, 6 months experience) → D (E cert + 1 yr) → C (D cert + 2 yrs) → B (C cert + 3 yrs) → A (B cert + 4 yrs). Water Distribution Operators go D (entry) → C → B → A — there is no Class E on the distribution side. Facilities are classified in Groups I–VI for treatment and I–V for distribution, with the required operator class scaling up by group. The board also licenses Biological Wastewater, Physical/Chemical Wastewater, Bottled Water, and Well Driller operators (each on a separate track). Passing scores differ by track: Water Treatment **42**, Water Distribution **70**, Bottled Water 52. Exam content uses WPI (Water Professionals International) need-to-know criteria. Exams are administered by appointment Mon–Sat at 9 AM or 1:30 PM through PSI; fees paid directly to PSI ($116 for 3-hour Level E/D/C, $136 for 4-hour Level B/A). Governing law: SC Code Title 40, Chapter 23 (Environmental Certification Board) and S.C. Reg. 4410.
