How Maine classifies drinking-water operators
Maine's operator licensing is governed by 90-429 C.M.R. Chapter 1 (Water System Operators Licensing Rule, last amended 2018) under authority of 22 M.R.S. §§2622, 2628.

Level 1 — Small Systems Operator → Class I
Entry-level certification. Small system operation, basic sampling, terminology, and maintenance.
IntermediateLevel 2 — Intermediate Operator → Class II
Intermediate-level exam prep. Treatment processes, operator math, regulations, troubleshooting.
AdvancedLevel 3 — Advanced Operator → Class III
Advanced-level certification. Process control, optimization, compliance for medium/large systems.
ExpertLevel 4 — Expert / Large System Operator → Class IV
Highest-level certification. Plant management, complex treatment trains, large-utility regulations.
