The decks cover all four water and wastewater operator certification exams: water treatment, distribution, wastewater treatment and collection, Class 1 through 4, plus 55 state-specific decks. Each card is an exam-style question with no answer choices, so you have to pull the answer from memory. Flip it, check yourself, and the cards you miss come back until you know them.
How to study with flashcards
Flashcards train recall, the part of the exam a multiple-choice quiz can hide. With the choices in front of you, it is easy to recognize the right one. On a flashcard you have to know it. Use both: flashcards to learn the material, then the practice tests to get used to the exam format.
- Say the answer before you flip. Out loud or in your head. If you can't, it's a "Still learning."
- Be honest with "Got it." Mark it only if you knew it without the card. Missed cards come back at the end of the round.
- One level at a time. Pick the class you're testing for, or narrow it to a single topic.
- Practice the math separately. Math problems need to be worked, so they aren't in the decks. Use the water math and wastewater math practice tests.
Flashcards for your state
Pick your state on any exam type above and the decks switch to your state's level names, like Texas Class D to A, California T1 to T5 or Washington Group I to IV. States that write their own exams get their own decks. Everywhere else uses the national WPI exam content, which is what most states test. See every state's exams on the states page.
Frequently asked questions
Are these flashcards free?
Yes. Every deck is free and needs no account. Your progress (which cards you know) is saved in your browser on that device.
Which exams do the flashcards cover?
Water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment and wastewater collection, Class 1 through 4, built on the WPI exam outlines most states use. There are also 55 state-specific decks for states that write their own exams, such as Texas, California, Alabama and Montana.
Do the flashcards include math?
No. Math problems need to be worked out, not recalled, so they are left out of the decks. Practice them on the water math and wastewater math practice tests instead.
Should I use flashcards or practice tests?
Both. Flashcards build recall because there are no answer choices to lean on. Practice tests get you used to the multiple-choice format and the length of the real exam. A good routine is flashcards to learn a topic, then a practice test to check it.
Do they work on my phone?
Yes. Tap the card to flip it, then tap Got it or Still learning. Cards you miss come back later in the round.
