How California classifies drinking-water operators
California (SWRCB DDW) uses five water-treatment grades — T1 (entry) through T5 (master).
Full breakdown in the FAQ below.
Choose your California certification grade
T1
Entry-level California water-treatment operator. SWRCB DDW basics, Title 22, basic plant components, disinfection, sampling, operator math. No prior experience required.
California · SWRCB DDWT2
Intermediate California water-treatment operator. Operate-the-equipment depth: jar tests, sedimentation/filter operation, two-step math, RTCR/LCR sampling protocols, Fe/Mn and H₂S treatment.
California · SWRCB DDWT3
Advanced California water-treatment operator. Diagnose-and-optimize depth: lab analyses (alkalinity titration, MF coliform), corrosion control + LSI, thermal stratification, enhanced coagulation, CT with baffle factor, horsepower math (WHP/BHP/MHP), Cr-VI RCF, PFAS framework.
California · SWRCB DDWT4
Expert California water-treatment operator for large/complex systems. Pump-curve interpretation, advanced treatment (GAC/RO/ozone), LCRR LSL Inventory, capital planning, asset management, drought/wildfire/seismic resilience, and large-system operations management.

California certifies wastewater treatment operators separately from drinking-water operators. The cards below map our four wastewater practice tests to California's wastewater class names.
Class I → Grade I
Entry-level wastewater operator. Wastewater characteristics, collection systems, preliminary/primary treatment, activated-sludge basics, disinfection, solids handling, lab work, and operator math.
California wastewaterClass II → Grade II
Intermediate wastewater operator. Secondary treatment, process control, troubleshooting, regulations, and two-step operator math.
California wastewaterClass III → Grade III
Advanced wastewater operator. Process optimization, nutrient removal, biosolids handling, lab analyses, and compliance for medium and large plants.
California wastewaterClass IV → Grade IV–V
Expert wastewater operator. Plant management, complex treatment trains, advanced nutrient removal, and large-utility regulations.
California wastewater treatment uses five grades; Grade V is the master level. Grades IV and V are grouped here.
