Frequently asked questions

How does Maryland classify water operators?
Maryland's operator certification is governed by COMAR 26.06.01 (Waterworks and Waste Systems Operators) under authority of the Environment Article, Title 12, Annotated Code of Maryland. Five regulated categories exist: Water Treatment Plants (Classes 1-5 plus G — Class 1 Disinfection; 2 Chemical Treatment; 3 Simple Iron Removal; 4 Complete Treatment with coagulation/sedimentation/filtration; 5 Site-Specific alternative; G No-chemical-treatment well/UV/storage), Water Distribution Systems (single class, WD), Wastewater Treatment Plants (Classes 1-6 plus S Solids Handling and A Advanced Wastewater Treatment), Wastewater Collection Systems (Classes 1-2 only), and Industrial Wastewater Works (Classes 1-7). Certificate types include Operator, Superintendent, Temporary (= Operator-in-Training, used while awaiting specific assignment and working under direction of a certified operator/superintendent), and Grandparented certificates. Education requirement is a high school diploma or equivalency for all classes; experience requirements scale by class (e.g., Water Treatment Class 4 requires 3 years or 5,400 hours, with education substitutions allowed up to 2 years). Operators must be employed or awaiting specific employment in the class of works under review. Training is commonly delivered by the Maryland Center for Environmental Training (MCET). Our Class 1-4 quizzes map to the Water Treatment Plant track.
